VfL Wolfsburg is in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup. In the second round, Wolfsburg won 2-1 (1-1) in the Lower Saxony duel against Eintracht Braunschweig on Tuesday (October 18th, 2022). The goals for Wolfsburg were scored by Mattias Svanberg (8th minute) and Jakub Kaminski (65th). Maurice Multhaup (40th) had meanwhile equalized for Braunschweig.
The derby was accompanied from the start by pyrotechnics and flares from the Wolfsburg fans. During the first half, VfL managing director Jörg Schmadtke went to the fence of the guest block to talk to the supporters. The police marched inside the stadium.
Svanberg provides Wolfsburg’s lead
Wolfsburg got off to a better start in the game. While Braunschweig’s Fabio Kaufmann missed his first big chance after just 30 seconds, it was 0:1 after Wolfsburg’s first chance. After a free kick, Wolfsburg’s new signing Svanberg appeared free in front of Braunschweig goalkeeper Jasmin Fejzic and scored the lead.
First Multhaup equalizes, then Ihorst hits the post
Eintracht equalized just before half-time when Multhaup sucked a high ball out of the air and flicked it past goalkeeper Koen Casteels with his left foot.
The match remained exciting because neither team speculated on extra time, but wanted to force the decision in regular time. In the 62nd minute, Braunschweig were only a few centimeters short when a shot by substitute Luc Ihorst grazed the outside of the post.
Kaminski scores and forgives
A goal was scored just three minutes later – but it was a goal for Wolfsburg. Kaminski and Lukas Nmecha played a one-two, but it all happened too quickly for Braunschweig. In the end, Kaminski tipped the ball past goalkeeper Fejzic to score the 2-1 winner.
Kaminski almost scored another goal shortly before the end, but after a pass by Omar Marmoush he pushed the ball wide of the goal from close range (89′).
Wolfsburg demanded in Leverkusen
