SC Magdeburg clearly won its semifinals at the Club World Cup against the Egyptian record champions by 36:28 (18:17). This puts the SCM one step closer to defending the title.
Score in the first half
Both teams started furiously in the first round and gave nothing away, especially Al-Ahly met the defending champion from Saxony-Anhalt without fear. This was reflected in the score: After less than 14 minutes, Magdeburg had already given the Egyptians double figures (10:7/14th minute). However, Al-Ahly fought back with a majority – in an otherwise long and fair game – and at half time was only 17:18 behind the SCM.
Red card turns the game – SC Magdeburg marches away
After the change of sides, it remained balanced until the 36th minute. Then Eslam Eissa involuntarily made the preliminary decision: he saw the red card after a foul on Gisli Kristjansson (36th). The SCM took advantage of the following majority and let the lead grow bit by bit. Al-Ahly kept trying, but couldn’t do anything against Magdeburgers who had been ripped off and was sent off at 28:36. The best thrower of the match was Omar Ingi Magnusson, who had already scored five goals at half-time and was able to contribute eight goals in the end for the SCM victory.
SCM meets Barcelona again
The final will take place on Sunday 23 October at 7.30pm. As in the 2021 final, FC Barcelona is waiting there. In the second semi-final, the Catalans defeated KS Kielce from Poland 39:28 (16:11) and got their revenge for the lost final last year, in which FCB lost 28:33 against Magdeburg.
