An earthquake shook the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) on Tuesday March 21, when the rumors were confirmed that Victoria Alonso, the Argentine production company that was part of the studio’s small table since the film “Hombre de Hierro”, left the company last Friday. Alonso had been with the company since the first movie of the “Iron Man”, starring Robert Downey Jr, that gave rise to Disney’s most successful and multi-billion dollar franchise.
The production company joined Marvel in 2006 as head of visual effects and post-production, and was involved in the 2008 release of “Iron Man” as a co-producer. She counted the co-producer credits on “Iron Man 2” (2010), “Thor”“(2011) and “Captain America: The First Avengers” (2011), and was elevated to an EP on “Avengers” (2012). In that aspect, she had worked so far in all Marvel movies and series with the exception of “The Incredible Hulk.” In addition, her position became vital for the company from ‘The Avengers’, in which she served as executive producer.
Her weight in Marvel grew over the years and in 2021 she was promoted to president of production for the company. She was also known for being one of the great defenders of diversity and inclusion in this universe of superheroes, so she remains to be seen if her departure will bring about changes on that side.
Her role was important in increasing the number of women hired to direct Marvel movies and series, including Chloe Zhao and Nia DaCosta for the movies “Eternals” and “The Marvels”, Jac Schaeffer for “WandaVision”, Kari Skogland for “Falcon and the Winter Soldier”, Kat Coiro for She-Hulk.
Prior to Marvel, Alonso, born in the province of Buenos Aires, started in the digital domain of the visual effects studio, serving as a visual effects producer for films such as Ridley Scott’s “Kingdom of Heaven”, Tim Burton’s “The Big Fish” and Andrew Adamson’s “Shrek”.
From The Hollywood Reporter they point out that the reasons for Alonso’s departure are unknown, although it is possible that he had been testing his departure for some time. After all, Alonso worked as a producer of “Argentina, 1985”the film starring Ricardo Darin.
Alonso has been an executive producer on several Marvel movies and Disney+ series, including most recently “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, “Thor Love and Thunder” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”in addition to the series as “Loki” and “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special”to name a few.
Box office performance “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”a movie called to be the big boom of Phase 5, received questionable reviews from the most hardcore fandom, along with some comments on the “Eternals” project, which came to light last year.
