It’s been about nothing else for the past few days: it’s been warm for two days this week, yesterday and today. Temperatures today rise to 40 degrees or perhaps even higher in many places. The crèches are closing, Albert Heijn is canceling deliveries and Ronald Molendijk is wearing shorts in the Shownieuws studio.

40 degrees

America expert Victor Vlam, Ronald’s colleague at Shownieuws, is not too concerned about it. “I lived in the United States for many years. It was often really common there in the summer, 40 degrees. And not just for one or two days, but all summer long. I can handle this quite well,” he says in the show section.

Colleague Anouk Smulders believes that we should especially take good care of animals. “You know what I always think about this kind of heat? Go and see for yourself what those animals do! So go for a walk on the asphalt with your bare feet, sit in one of those battery cages. Then you experience what those animals experience.”

common sense

Hysterical talk from Anouk, Victor thinks so. “This also indicates a bit that we are dealing with a bit of hysteria here, because I think animals are perfectly capable of regulating their own temperature.”

He continues: “You just have a little common sense required. If you just make sure there’s water available, I think you’ll be fine. A little shade and a little water.”

mass hysteria

Victor is annoyed that some crèches are closed because of the heat. “I think it’s another sign of our mass hysteria, guys. Again: it’s one day that it’s close to 40 degrees. We as humans are built for this.”

He concludes: “Humanity started in Africa, when it was a lot warmer. We can handle this. We are driving ourselves crazy. Just seek water, just seek shade.”
