With videoThe final medals will be awarded today at the World Athletics Championships. Early in the morning, Abdi Nageeye made a bid for medals in the marathon in a warm Budapest, but he had to stop the fight after 27 kilometers. The gold went to Victor Kiplangat (23) from Uganda. At the conclusion of the World Cup, it is the moment of truth for the Dutch relay teams on the 4×400 meters tonight. Here you can follow the most important developments!
Abdi Nageeye has stepped out on the marathon. The 34-year-old Dutch trump gave up after about 27 kilometers in Budapest, on the hottest day of the year in the capital of Hungary. The Dutch record holder 42.195 usually copes well with difficult circumstances. He ran in the heat of Sapporo at the 2021 Games in Japan to a sensational silver medal behind the unapproachable Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge.
Nageeye also did not take revenge for his failed performance a year ago at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene due to his failure. Then the Somali-born got out 1 kilometer from the finish, disappointed that he could no longer win a medal. Afterwards, he also blamed his shoes; he had entered the marathon in barely broken-in footwear and could not find his rhythm.
This morning in Budapest he seemed to be mainly bothered by the heat, although Nageeye said afterwards that the problem was mainly in his upper legs and not in the circumstances. The marathon started at a temperature of 24 degrees, but quickly crept towards 30 degrees.
Last year winner in Rotterdam
Initially, nothing seemed to be wrong with the man who won the Rotterdam marathon in 2.04.56 in 2022 and finished third in the New York marathon last fall. He was part of the large leading group, which was not running at a too fast pace because of the heat. At the 25-kilometre mark he was in about thirtieth place, at the back of the group. Soon after, he stepped off the course.
My legs just got heavier. You are a marathoner, so you keep going, but in the end you have to be selfish
“I am not sad at all. Still looking for that feeling. After only three kilometers I felt that my legs felt heavy. It felt like my thighs were dangling. It just didn’t feel right. My thighs were heavy, the rest felt fine. It’s really a mystery to me. They call it pap in the legs, it’s difficult to explain,” said Nageeye afterwards at the NOS. “Actually, I knew very quickly that it wasn’t going to work out. My legs only got heavier. You’re a marathon runner, so you keep going, but in the end you still have to be selfish “How can this happen?” then haunts your mind.I also felt this at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Then it went even better after 32 kilometers, but I have now chosen to get out. Shit happens, but I’ve given up on it now. Hopefully I will come back stronger.”

Victor Kiplangat wins the Budapest Marathon
Victor Kiplangat (23) from Uganda crosses the line as the winner in a good time of 2:08:53. A great achievement given the conditions in Budapest, where temperatures are already creeping towards 30 degrees.
Kiplangat was 19 seconds ahead of the Israeli Maru Teferi. The bronze was in 2.09.19 for the Ethiopian Leul Gebresilase.
09:06
Last kilometer starts before Kiplangat
Victor Kiplangat starts his last kilometer and can’t be stopped from the wins. He comes through in 2 hours and exactly 5 minutes after 41 kilometers.
The hole at number two Leul Gebresilase (30) from Ethiopia is nineteen seconds, behind that is another gap of nineteen seconds to the number three.
09:01
Two hours on the road
We are two hours away, so we are now really entering the decisive phase of the Budapest marathon. Victor Kiplangat (23) from Uganda is on his way to the world title. His lead on Leul Gebresilase (30) from Ethiopia grows to about fifteen seconds, while Teferi and Tola have to compete for the bronze medal.
08:56
Teferi and Tola chasing the lead group
Maru Teferi (31) out Israel and Tamirat Tola (32). Ethiopia chasing the front two runners. Those are Leul Gebresilase (30) out Ethiopia and Victor Kiplangat (23) from Uganda.
08:45
Abdi Nageeye steps out of marathon
We are now 1 hour and 44 minutes into the race, so the decisive phase of the marathon now begins. That will happen without Abdi Nageeye, who stopped after he had to let the leading group go after 24 kilometers.
08:40
Two groups of three
After 1 hour and 40 minutes we are dealing with two groups of three athletes who seem to be fighting for the overall victory. Victor Kiplangat (23) from Uganda is now in the lead with two Ethiopian athletes with him. Those are Tamirat Tola (32) and Gebreselassie. Twenty meters behind that is the second group of three athletes.
08:23
Abdi Nageeye falls behind
Ah, what a pity. Abdi Nageeye has to let the leading group go. After 24 minutes of kilometers, his gap increases to 27 seconds. That will be very difficult to make up for. The first hour he was able to win his battle with the heat, but after that it was quickly over.
08:17
Timothy Kiplagat kicks up the pace
The Kenyan Timothy Kiplagat kicks up the pace at the front. Abdi Nageeye is still in the leading group, but around 20th place is clearly struggling with the heat in the early morning in Budapest. He just put on a cap, but throws it off again a few minutes later. He also often throws his shirt up to air it out.
08:06
Abdi Nageeye halfway in place 18
We are now exactly half way. The leading group comes through in a time of 1 hour, five minutes and three seconds. Abdi Nageeye is in eighteenth place in the leading group of twenty athletes.
08:01
Marathon an hour on the road
We’ve been on the road for exactly one hour now. On the famous Chain Bridge in Budapest broke the leading group in two. Abdi Nageeye is still in the front group.
07:53
Abdi Nageeye rolls up shirt
A striking face in the leading group, where Abdi Nageeye seems to be bothered by the heat. For the third time in a short time, he pulls his shirt all the way up, making it look more like a sports bra.
It is already 23 degrees in Budapest. It will be at least 34 degrees later today in the capital of Hungary.
07:43
Abdi Nageeye in 18th place
After 42 minutes, Abdi Nageeye is still in the leading group. He does that in eighteenth position. Not really in the picture, but for now everything is under control for the winner of the Rotterdam marathon.
07:41
41-year-old runner from Mongolia has to get out
Ai, for Ser-Od Bat-Ochir from Mongolia, the marathon is finished after 40 minutes. The 41-year-old rider has plenty of experience with his eleventh World Cup participation, but still misclassified his race. He now has to pay dearly for his slightly too enthusiastic start.
It may have been his last World Cup, but it is expected that he will compete in the marathon at the Olympic Games in Paris next year.
07:31
Half an hour on the road
We are now half an hour into the marathon. The Kenyan Timothy Kiplagat leads with a small lead over the rest.
The 41 year old Ser-Od Bat-Ochir Mongolia seems to have started his eleventh World Cup a little too enthusiastically. He made his debut in 2003 and planned to run again twenty years later. He kept that up for twenty minutes, but has to pay dearly for it. After half an hour he is already dealing with cramps and now he is pulling his legs.
07:03
Good morning
Good morning and welcome to our live blog of the final day of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest. We started the marathon at 07:00.
Can Abdi Nageeye compete for the medals in this strong field?
