Swedish ice hockey player Victor Björkung30, witnessed the shocking tragedy from just a few meters away.
Last weekend, the star striker of the English Nottingham Panthers Adam Johnson29, died when a skate sliced his neck in a game against Sheffield.
Aftonbladet interviewed Björkung says that he cried over the fate of his teammate. Crisis assistance has been arranged for the team. Hockey is not uppermost in mind.
In that situation, Björkung passed the puck to Johnson. Moments later, there was some unfortunate contact when the Sheffield player’s skate swung at Johnson.
– I was in shock immediately. I didn’t want to watch the video clip afterwards. It was enough for me to see it in the rink.
– I immediately understood how serious the situation was when I saw him bleeding. Adam put his glove over the wound and I tried to look away. Then I saw between my fingers how he collapsed again, says Björkung.
Björkung describes what happened as the worst moment he has ever seen.
– I haven’t been able to sleep, I have panic attacks at night. Even everyday chores have become difficult.
Johnson was a well-liked person among the team.
Björkung has also been in contact with Sheffield Matt Petgravewhose skate hit Johnson.
– He has received completely unfair treatment on social media. I wrote him a message hoping he would know that we support him and no one blames him for what happened.
Johnson was a former NHL player. Johnson, who played his first season in England, was part of the Pittsburgh Penguins organization from 2018 to 2020. In the NHL, 13 games were accumulated over two seasons.
Johnson also played for one season in Sweden and Germany.
