VfL women throw FC Bayern out of the cup

The footballers of VfL Wolfsburg robbed FC Bayern of their last chance for the title and kept their prospect of the treble. Coach Tommy Stroot’s team won the DFB Cup semifinals in Munich 3-1 (1-0) on Sunday.

In the final on May 28, the cup defender meets the winner of the game on Easter Monday (6.30 p.m. / Sky) between Bayer Leverkusen and Turbine Potsdam.

In front of 2300 spectators, Dutchwoman Jill Roord scored twice (19th and 61st minute) and substitute Tabea Waßmuth (80th) for the guests in a dogged duel. Serbian Jovana Damnjanovic equalized in the meantime with a penalty kick (50th).

“We fought well in the game, but not always as we wanted in terms of football. We score goals too easily and need far too many chances to reward ourselves,” said captain Lina Magull in an ARD interview. “After intense weeks, today is another low blow.”

The Wolfsburg women, who were able to rely on national goalkeeper Almuth Schult despite a shoulder injury, can still hope for their eighth cup win in a row. “We were ruthlessly effective today, even if we didn’t play our best game,” said the 31-year-old.

The Bayern women, who were much stronger this time, could not take revenge for the 0:6 swatter in Wolfsburg two weeks ago, which had put VfL on course for the title in the Bundesliga. Coach Jens Scheuer had to watch his team’s end on TV at home because of a positive corona test on the day of the game.

With this success, Wolfsburg also celebrated a successful dress rehearsal for the semi-final first leg in the Champions League on April 22nd at FC Barcelona. There, VfL may have to do without national player Lena Oberdorf, who hobbled off after a foul by Lineth Beerensteyn after fifteen minutes.
