No accusation from VfL coach Kohfeldt
Shortly before the end of the transfer in the summer of 2021, Dodi Lukébakio made a surprising loan move from Hertha BSC to VfL Wolfsburg. This transfer has not turned out to be a success for any of the parties involved. The 24-year-old attacker made 24 appearances for the “Wolves”, scoring one goal and three assists in 1,164 minutes of play. Since matchday 21, however, Lukébakio has only been able to make three joker appearances.
“He dealt with it extremely well,” said VfL coach Florian Kohfeldt (quoted via “foosball”) about the Belgian, who no longer plays a sporting role. “To this day I can’t blame the boy in terms of character.” Lukékabio was not guilty of anything. “It’s always a purely sporting decision for him.” Head of sport Marcel Schäfer summed it up: “Both sides certainly expected more from the loan. But there hasn’t been a final talk yet.”

At the beginning of March, “VfL_El_Nino” in the Wolfsburg TM forum described the situation surrounding the offensive player as “a shame” because he “thought in the meantime that he would do it for us and could become a key player. One or the other performance was quite impressive”. Defensive work is considered a major shortcoming at Lukébakio. In Berlin, the left foot is still under contract until 2024, and whether and how things will continue for him in the capital is likely to be related to the head coach of Hertha for the 2022/23 season, who has yet to be named.
No future in Wolfsburg: Lukébakio became a record purchase at Hertha BSC
Lukébakio switched from Watford FC to the Bundesliga club for 20 million euros in 2019 and became the club’s record purchase at the time. In football you never know what will happen, he clarified after the deal on “Bild”. “But I’m here to stabilize my career and develop myself further.” Previously, the striker knew how to convince on loan at Fortuna Düsseldorf.
