The footballers of VfL Wolfsburg were celebrated by the fans after reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League, and coach Tommy Stroot was full of praise for his team.
Beating “such an international class” is “really something that makes us extremely proud,” said the VfL coach after the 1-1 (1-1) draw in the second leg of the quarter-finals against Paris St. Germain.
The German double winner won the first duel in France 1-0. In the VW Arena on Thursday evening Alexandra Popp secured the Wolfsburg team’s ticket for the next round in the 20th minute, where Arsenal are waiting in April.
“We’ll look forward to it because it’s clear it’s the last step towards the final,” said the DFB captain: “And we want to win it.”
Wolfsburg star Oberdorf: Progress against PSG “immensely important”
After the Wolfsburg team lost their lead in the Bundesliga table to FC Bayern on Saturday, progressing in the premier class was “immensely important, even if we weren’t satisfied with the way we were doing, especially in the first half,” explained national player Lena Oberdorf .
VfL initially struggled against the French, but then got into the game better and better. After Kadidiatou Diani’s equalizer (30′), Wolfsburg defended resolutely, but missed a few chances up front.
Nevertheless, the performance in the second half could “quite well give the team back their self-confidence,” emphasized Oberdorf.
Semi-final opponents Arsenal are known from last year, “we also know what the challenge looks like,” said Stroot. Last season, Wolfsburg made it to the semi-finals after beating England 1-1 and 2-0.
