Werder return not an issue
Wolfsburg’s managing director Jörg Schmadtke wants to mediate in the tense situation around coach Niko Kovac and veteran Max Kruse. “It’s quite possible that I’ll sit down with both of them at a table to talk to each other,” Schmadtke told the “Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung”. He also said self-critically: “So far we haven’t managed to deal with the issue confidently.”
The background is the dissatisfaction of the 34-year-old Kruse, who had publicly wished for more playing time after three league games as a reservist. In an interview after VfL’s 0-0 draw against FC Schalke 04 on Saturday, Kovac was annoyed by the debate about the attacker.
Sports director Marcel Schäfer pointed out – like Kovac – that the merits of the winter newcomer from last season no longer count: “A new coach can only evaluate what he sees in the preparation,” said Schäfer. “And Niko does it right. Max has his strengths, but that doesn’t exempt him from having to give 100 percent. He tries, he does, but the coach decides.”

Max Kruse back to Werder Bremen? Filbry sees no need
In all likelihood, Kruse will not return to SV Werder Bremen by Deadline Day. “Max Kruse is a player at VfL Wolfsburg and I don’t see anything that can happen at the moment,” said SVW Managing Director Klaus Filbry (quoted via “DeichStube”) on Saturday on “Sky”. “We have a squad that we are very happy with and that performs well.” Bremen won spectacularly in the Bundesliga 3-2 at BVB after three goals in the closing stages.
