VfL Wolfsburg | Schmadtke upset after Steffen’s criticism: “You can’t do it”

Sports director Jörg Schmadtke from VfL Wolfsburg reacted angrily to public criticism by VfL professional Renato Steffen of former Wolfsburg coach Florian Kohfeldt.

“I think you don’t do something like that,” Schmadtke told the “Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung”. “The way he puts it, he outlines the problem we had last season very well. Many pushed problems away from themselves instead of taking responsibility for themselves. Renato would also have done well to focus more on himself to occupy myself.”

The 30-year-old winger made negative comments about Kohfeldt at a media event for the Swiss national team on Friday. “The last six months have definitely been one of the most difficult phases of my career. I’ve never had such problems with a coach before,” said Steffen.

The Swiss has been playing for VfL since January 2018 and is now considering an early departure.

According to a report by “kicker”, his national team colleague Kevin Mbabu is also a candidate for a change, because Wolfsburg have signed German U21 international Kilian Fischer from 1. FC Nürnberg for his position on the right side of defence. The contracts with Steffen and Mbabu are valid until 2023.
