Missed the cup game against RB
VfL Wolfsburg will probably have to be without Patrick Wimmer for longer than initially thought. The 22-year-old Austrian was missing from Lower Saxony’s squad for the 1-0 (1-0) win in the DFB Cup against RB Leipzig; according to coach Niko Kovac, the reason was ankle problems. On Wednesday we will examine whether an operation is even necessary.
“The fact is that he will fly to Austria tomorrow for an examination. Only then will we know exactly what needs to be done. We are assuming that he will now be out longer,” said the VfL coach (quoted via “Kicker“) after the game on Tuesday evening. “The only question is how much and whether anything needs to be done operationally. We’ll know that tomorrow. I don’t wish it on him, but if that’s the case, he’ll certainly be out for some time.”
The fact that Wimmer missed the encounter against Leipzig did not initially come as a surprise after he was substituted due to injury on Saturday. However, in the Bundesliga game at FC Augsburg (2:3), FCA defender Mads Pedersen hit the offensive player on the left ankle, and the current problems occur on the other foot.
Wimmer had lost his regular place, which he held for large parts of last season, this season. On the 7th and 8th matchdays he even had to watch for the full 90 minutes against VfB Stuttgart and Bayer 04 Leverkusen. With a market value of 18 million euros, which remained untouched in the last update, Wimmer is the third most valuable VfL professional.
