Contract in Wolfsburg until 2023
After serious injury problems, Paulo Otávio wants to make a new attempt next season at VfL Wolfsburg. The 27-year-old left-back is returning after a cruciate ligament rupture – an ankle injury had previously put him out of action for a long time. “The worst year of my career is behind me. I hope it never gets that hard again. But now I’m ready,” Otávio said in an interview with “Kicker”.
The left-footed player switched from FC Ingolstadt to Wolfsburg in 2019 for 1.1 million euros and has played 50 games since then, scoring one goal and six assists. He is currently “right on schedule” and the professional can “do everything again”. In mid-June he will start training in front of the team. “I can hardly wait, I dream of being back on the training ground at night,” said Otávio.

The Brazilian is looking forward to working with the new coach Niko Kovac, but praised his predecessor Florian Kohfeldt, who was surprisingly released after the end of the season and for whom he only played nine games. I found it extraordinary how the 39-year-old “accepted the task. He didn’t bring an assistant coach with him, he was familiar to everyone at VfL. He’s a great coach with a big heart. But I’m also looking forward to Niko Kovac. He has had success in Frankfurt, with Bayern and with Monaco. He was also great as a player, I’ll absorb everything from him.”

Otávio’s contract runs until June 2023, but he doesn’t know what will happen after that. “We haven’t had any talks yet, which wasn’t that easy lately. Now I want to get back on the pitch first, we’ll see about everything else.”
