Despite a fivefold increase in salary
At the end of November, managing director Jörg Schmadtke said he was “in good contact” with Omar Marmoush in order to negotiate his new contract with VfL Wolfsburg. The 23-year-old’s current contract expires in the summer and originally both sides were interested in continuing to work together. This has changed now.
“An extension of the working paper is not in sight. As of today it is unfortunately not going to work. From our point of view, that’s a shame, we would have liked to have extended him,” said the 58-year-old “Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung” quoted. Schmadtke does not provide precise reasons for the failed negotiations. According to the newspaper, most of these are financially afflicted. Marmoush’s current contract dates from the summer of 2020, when the offensive player made the leap from youth to the professionals, and accordingly contains a comparatively low salary of 500,000 euros.

The salary now offered by VfL, which is said to be 2.5 million euros, apparently does not meet the player’s claims because he is denied the additional 2 million euros in bonus money that is also required. From January 1st, Marmoush can officially negotiate with other clubs and hope for better offers. Bonus money is now common for free transfer players due to the lack of a transfer fee. Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach, among others, are said to be interested.

The striker provided only limited sporting arguments for an even higher-paid contract this season. In 17 appearances, Marmoush scored three goals. Last season there were eight goals in 21 games for VfB Stuttgart and ten scorers in 21 games for FC St. Pauli in the 2020/21 Bundesliga 2.
In Wolfsburg, those responsible are aware of the Egyptian’s potential, but at the same time don’t want to take too many financial risks: “It’s always a bet on the future. Of course, it’s possible that Omar will one day become the top scorer, but it can also happen that he doesn’t develop as hoped,” said Schmadtke.
