After Schmadtke-Aus end of January
What has already been suspected in the past few weeks is now official: Marcel Schäfer will be promoted to Managing Director Sport at VfL Wolfsburg in February 2023. The 38-year-old, who has been sports director at the “Wolves” since 2018, will take over from Jörg Schmadtke, who will then leave, and will receive a contract until 2026. Meanwhile, Schäfer’s successor will be Sebastian Schindzielorz.
“Marcel Schäfer has had close ties to VfL Wolfsburg for many years. Even as a player on the pitch, he embodied the virtues of VfL, with which he has also successfully mastered his duties as sports director since 2018. It has been proven that Marcel Schäfer not only has a very high level of sporting expertise, but also identifies one hundred percent with the club and the region,” said Frank Witter, Chairman of the Supervisory Board, explaining the decision.

“I am very happy about the trust that is placed in me and my work. Following in Jörg Schmadtke’s footsteps will be a great challenge, which I will tackle with great joy and enthusiasm. I’ve been working closely with Jörg for over four years and I’m very grateful that he gave me the opportunity to learn, work independently and develop every day,” said the former left-back, who played 312 games for VfL ran up. In 2009 he won the championship together with Schindzielorz, who will now succeed him as sports director and will receive a working paper until 2025.
