Striker “can’t wait”

VfL Wolfsburg has signed Kevin Behrens from Union Berlin. The “Wolves” announced this on Wednesday evening, one day before deadline day. The 32-year-old should immediately strengthen VfL’s previously harmless attack line. According to reports, Behrens signed until at least 2026, but there was no confirmation from the club.

As a transfer for Behrens, the pay TV broadcaster “Sky” brought a sum of around 2.5 million to 3.5 million euros including bonuses into play, meaning that for the first time in his career, money will flow from a transfer of the attacker, which has always been free of charge changed the club. A winter transfer of a striker with only six months left on his contract from Union to VfL is nothing new: Max Kruse (35) moved in January 2022 for a fee of 5 million euros under these conditions. This makes Kruse the most expensive over-32 Wolfsburg signing in the club’s history, with Behrens following behind him.

“Kevin comes from current game operations, he knows the league and will therefore only need a short period of getting used to it,” said Wolfsburg’s sports director Sebastian Schindzielorz. “He has proven his qualities on the pitch again and again in recent years. With Kevin, we now have a striker in our squad who has an exceptionally good header game, a great mentality and a high level of resilience, even in view of our failures in the offensive area.

Union’s managing director of professional football Oliver Ruhnert explained: “Fulfilling Kevin’s request to move to VfL Wolfsburg was a very difficult decision for us. It’s been a great journey with him over the last few years. We will miss him as a guy and yet we will always fondly remember his time at Union.”

From Union Berlin to VfL Wolfsburg: Behrens explains change

Behrens said: “It’s nice that my path in the Bundesliga continues here in Wolfsburg. In discussions with those responsible, it quickly became clear to me that they really wanted me at VfL. I can hardly wait to complete the first training session with my new teammates and help the team be successful in the games.” The goalscorer has stormed for the “Iron” since 2021 and contributed 20 goals and eight in 105 appearances templates. Behrens was set, but there is new competition in the person of Chris Bedia (27) and another newcomer: If the signing of Eindhoven’s Yorbe Vertessen (23) does not work out, Mislav Orsic (31) from Trabzonspor is an alternative.

The “Wolves” have one of the weakest attacks in the Bundesliga with 23 goals (Union, Cologne, Darmstadt, Mainz and Bochum are weaker) and were looking for reinforcements for the offensive – although the squad seems to be well equipped on paper. “I don’t want to rule anything out now. The market will still be open for a few days,” Schindzielorz was last quoted as saying. Now Behrens is the solution.
