VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga for the first time in 23 months without Maximilian Arnold

Not among perennial favorites

For the first time in almost two years, VfL Wolfsburg has to play in the Bundesliga without its captain Maximilian Arnold. The 28-year-old midfielder will miss the home game against 1. FC Union Berlin on Sunday (7.30 p.m. / DAZN) because of his fifth yellow card this season.

“It’s a loss. But I do believe that we can and will compensate for this loss,” said coach Niko Kovac on Friday. “That’s why I’m not worried at all.” The former captain Josuha Guilavogui and Felix Nmecha are the most likely substitutes this Sunday.

Most recently, Arnold missed the home game against FC Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga on April 17, 2021. Due to six substitutions, he is still not at the top of the Bundesliga long-running statistics. With 2,004 completed minutes, Arnold ranks behind 15 professionals, eight players around his teammates Micky van de Ven (21) and Koen Casteels (30) have not missed a minute of the game.
