VfL Wolfsburg distances itself from FC Bayern

After the fourth Bundesliga matchday, which was packed with spectators, the VfL Wolfsburg footballers are already four points ahead of the defending champions FC Bayern.

The runners-up from Lower Saxony won 2-0 (1-0) at RB Leipzig. The newcomer played in the Red Bull Arena for the first time and attracted 10,269 spectators.

The Munich team recorded 19,000 visitors at their premiere in the Allianz Arena, a club record crowd for FC Bayern in the league. However, they had to be content with a 0-0 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

Wolfsburg is two points ahead of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim at the top, FC Bayern is third. Ewa Pajor (38th minute) and Vivien Endemann (79th) scored for the Champions League finalists.

Coach Tommy Stroot’s team was lucky that referee Katrin Rafalski did not punish a handball by Marina Hegering in the penalty area (65th). VfL will fight on Wednesday (6:45 p.m.) against Paris FC (first leg 3:3) for a place in the group stage of the premier class.

The Bayern women couldn’t think of much against Frankfurt – without the injured Sydney Lohmann, Carolin Simon and Pernille Harder.

“We know that a draw hurts, especially with a view to the championship,” said national player Linda Dallmann. “It’s not ideal and it’s not what we want that we’ve already drawn twice after four match days.”

For the first time, there were three so-called highlight games in one weekend in large stadiums where the first division men usually play.

21,508 fans saw the game between Werder Bremen and 1. FC Köln (3-0) in the Weserstadion – that was also a club record. The attendance record in the women’s Bundesliga was set last season at 1. FC Köln’s game against Eintracht Frankfurt with 38,365 fans.
