Before top game against Bayer
Although VfL Wolfsburg have only won two of the last ten games in the Bundesliga, coach Niko Kovac still believes in the chance of a place in the European Cup before the home game against direct competitor Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday (7:30 p.m.). “We don’t have enough points at the moment, but we’re still in the draw,” said the 51-year-old at a press conference on Friday.
While the Lower Saxony are in ninth place, Bayer is in sixth place and would therefore go on a European trip. “We still have seven game days. It’s all in our hands to finish seventh – maybe even better. It’s all very jammed in the table. But we have to get a three at the weekend, that would be important,” emphasized Kovac and added: “Especially since Leverkusen are already four points ahead and are a very good team.” Bayer, however, is a team that is actually “in the top 4” belong. It is now unclear whether seventh place is even enough for a European Cup participation. Depending on the outcome of the DFB Cup final in May, it will be clear whether the Bundesliga will provide a replacement or not.
Due to the disappointing haul of points in recent weeks, Wolfsburg fell back in the table, and the next two opponents at home are Leverkusen and Mainz (8th place). “We have a lot of good chances, we actually play well – but we don’t make enough of it,” said Kovac about the causes of the sporting problems. And further: “If we are behind, we won’t win the games. Then we have to play the game, the opponent is waiting for mistakes and counterattacks. We don’t like that at the moment. When we take the lead, it’s a lot easier for us.”
