Managing Director Jörg Schmadtke from VfL Wolfsburg will be retiring next year.
“I will end my managerial career at VfL in 2023,” said the 57-year-old on the sidelines of the 1-2 (1-0) win against TSG Hoffenheim on Sky. Schmadtke had previously extended his expiring contract by another seven months until the end of January 2023.
As a successor, Schmadtke brought up sports director Marcel Schäfer (37). “It could be that he takes over the fortunes of the club because that would make sense. His development is very good, you have to evaluate that objectively,” he said.
From Schmadtke’s point of view, extending it by only seven months makes perfect sense. “Otherwise I would have nothing to do from February except for an accompanying role. I would not be properly involved in the decisions in the summer, or I would make decisions that no longer affect me,” he said: “A club shouldn’t Pay another five months salary if I’m not the decision-maker. The term is therefore very logical. June 30th is less logical.”
Before his time in Wolfsburg, Schmadtke, a former Bundesliga goalkeeper, worked as a manager at Alemannia Aachen, Hannover 96 and 1. FC Köln.
