“Not an easy decision”
Captain Marc Heider from VfL Osnabrück ends his active career in the summer at the age of 37. As the purple-whites announced, the attacker, who comes from their own youth, will remain with the club in a new role in the future. From July, Heider will work in the VfL office in the area of marketing and sales.
Heider was promoted to the Osnabrück men’s squad in January 2006, at that time in the third-rate Regionalliga Nord. In 2006, the attacking player, who was born in Sacramento, California, switched to Werder Bremen II and three years later to Holstein Kiel, for which he contributed 85 goals and 53 assists in 241 games and helped the club into the 3rd division. Heider only played more games for his youth club, to which he returned in 2016: 258 in total (54 goals/37 assists). In the current third division season, he is mostly used as a joker.

Heider said: “My decision has matured over the last few weeks. I first had a very open exchange with Amir Shapourzadeh (sports director; editor’s note) about my current situation and possible prospects. At the same time, I listened to myself and talked to my family. It wasn’t an easy decision, it was extremely difficult for me. In the future, I will no longer be lacing up my football boots as a full-time job. Whether I will wear them again at a different level remains to be seen. Regardless of the outcome of the current season, I look back on my career with gratitude and satisfaction, but together with our great team and our fans we want to make the strong season as successful as possible. Then there will come a moment when, among other things, I will say goodbye to the fans and thank them for the incredible support they have given me over so many years. This is anything but a matter of course. A new chapter in my VfL history will begin for me in the summer, and I am very excited about the new perspective that VfL Osnabrück has opened up for me.”
