Second division bottom club VfL Osnabrück will definitely approach its next home game against 1. FC Magdeburg with interim coach Martin Heck in the dugout. Managing director Michael Welling confirmed this at the club’s annual general meeting.
The bottom of the table in the 2nd Bundesliga separated from its promotion coach Tobias Schweinsteiger last week.
After 15 years in the youth department of 1. FC Köln, the 40-year-old Heck most recently worked as an assistant coach at VfL. In parallel to this chance for the previous Schweinsteiger assistant, the Osnabrück team is also conducting discussions with external candidates.
Welling and VfL President Holger Elixmann defended the coaching change, which was criticized by many fans and members. Similar to sports director Amir Shapourzadeh, they also found some critical words about the popular Schweinsteiger.
“The cabin was lost,” said Elixmann. In the end, the relationship between coach and team deteriorated, confirmed managing director Welling.
