It all happened too quickly for VfL: Bayern overran Bochum at the end of the third matchday and gave the hosts an entry in the history books.
With the 7: 0 (4: 0) the record champions took over the lead again on Sunday (21.08.2022) and currently looks as if they will not give it up until the end of the season.
The Munich team went into the duel with three starting XI debutants, which ended in a memorable 4-1 win for VfL in February of this year: Matthijs de Ligt also joined the team, as did Leroy Sané and Kingsley, who was recently criticized for his body language Coman after ban expired. It was not noticed that Jamal Musiala, who was outstanding twice at the beginning of the season, had to pass due to adductor problems – the guests started with constant pressure and turbo speed.
Sané unleashed
Right from the start, Bochum had great difficulty getting into the duels because Bayern played the ball brilliantly – which was quickly reflected in the result. After a lightning combination via Joshua Kimmich, Thomas Müller and Coman, Sané flicked the ball into the right corner with his actually weaker right foot (4th).
Bochum responded boldly, with a quick counterattack, and promptly had the chance to equalize. However, de Ligt blocked Simon Zoller’s attempt in the 8th minute under great pressure, meaning that Manuel Neuer did not have to intervene.
Losilla forgives the equalizer
Seconds later, Neuer’s opponent was challenged again: Manuel Riemann parried with a class reflex against Sané, who played like unleashed. Twice Coman and again Sané could easily have increased up to the 20th minute, but were not precise enough in the end.
The fans had a lot of fun with the game, because Bochum, too, always looked to move forward immediately after winning the ball. A headed ball from center forward Philipp Hofmann was thrown over the crossbar in front of Neuer by Anthony Losilla.
Dubious VAR decision
It was a miss with consequences – because then Bayern made everything clear mercilessly. After a Kimmich corner, de Ligt headed in to make it 2-0 (25′), but since he got the ball in his hand while jumping, the goal shouldn’t have counted. Amazing: VAR Tobias Welz apparently assigned the hand to Cristian Gamboa, who had gone into the air duel with de Ligt, referee Daniel Siebert pointed to the center after a long discussion.
It wasn’t a good period for Gamboa. Eight minutes after the 0:2 he wanted to clear a high ball with a header back to Riemann, but Thomas Müller intervened, Riemann slapped the ball forward and gave Coman the 3:0.
Coman also shines as a preparer
Many a VfL fan must have wished for the break after that, because Bayern even increased the pressure. A Coman header pushed Sadio Mané over the line, but this time Welz intervened and recognized a handball that Mané had already signaled fairly himself. The Senegalese’s celebration was only postponed – seconds later he made it 4-0 (42′) after another excellent pass from Coman.
The good news for Bochum came shortly after the half-time whistle, the bad news followed immediately after the restart: Bayern just didn’t let up. Kimmich and Coman should have increased their lead before Mané scored from the penalty spot in the 60th minute: Saidy Janko had previously run into Coman’s heels.
Own goal by Gamboa
Then Bochum also punished themselves: Gamboa, one of the VfL match winners in February with a dream goal, tipped the ball past his own keeper into the net when trying to clear Coman: 0:6 after 68 minutes.
Serge Gnabry, who had just come on as a substitute, had prepared the goal and was also able to celebrate in the 77th minute: with the full instep, he chased a low shot into the far corner to make it 7-0. Zoller then had the honor goal on his feet, but VfL wasn’t even able to do that: Neuer deflected the ball to the post. After that, Bochum’s humiliation was over, but it will definitely find its way into the club’s chronicle: It was VfL’s heaviest home defeat in the club’s history, followed by a 6-0 loss to Werder Bremen from the 2006/07 season.
