VfL Bochum: Coach Thomas Reis threatens – extension from the table

Cracks in relation to VfL bosses

Zero points and a goal difference of 3:13 – VfL Bochum has never started as badly as in the 36th Bundesliga season. In history, only five teams in the upper house gave an even worse picture after four matchdays. While an extension with coach Thomas Reis at the end of last season seemed just a matter of form, according to “Sport Bild” the relationship with those responsible for the club has now developed deep cracks – so deep that further long-term cooperation seems unthinkable.

According to the magazine, an extension of Reis’ contract, which expires at the end of the season, is almost impossible. The 48-year-old must also turn things around in the next two games against promoted Werder Bremen (September 3, 3:30 p.m.) and Schalke 04 (September 10, 6:30 p.m.), wins are needed. Otherwise, Reis threatens the immediate end at VfL Bochum.

The big break between the coach and the club management came before the 0: 7 swatter against Bayern. In an interview with the “Funke Mediengruppe” Reis had emphasized that there were “no talks” about extending the contract and that he was “looking for work from July 1, 2023” – to the complete incomprehension of the VfL bosses. Reis later gave in publicly, admitting misrepresentation.

Offers from VfL Bochum rejected: Reis insists on top salary

“Recently there was some fuss about my statements on the current status of negotiations. They left room for speculation. More was read into it than was necessary. The fact is: there were offers from the club, most recently before the first competitive game of the season. So far we haven’t been able to come to an agreement,” a club statement quoted Reis, who was thus severely weakened in his authority, especially in front of his own team, according to “Sport Bild”. There had already been speculation about rice in the summer. The coach, who worked for other clubs such as VfL Wolfsburg, did not categorically rule out a change.

Reis himself is said to have rejected the previous offers from Bochum. Main reason: financial. According to the report, Reis wanted to receive more than 1 million euros in basic salary per year, but VfL Bochum only offered him a sum below this mark, which would have been achieved through bonuses if successful. Reis would have risen to become the top earner in the club. Instead, the CEO, Hans-Peter Villis, recently publicly announced that “the contract negotiations would be suspended for the time being, in order to resume them at a later date, for example during the World Cup.”
