Even before the start of the game, the bad news began at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Because after Yann Sommer also Tobias Sippel (injured in the final training session) was out, Jan Olschowsky had to make his Bundesliga debut in the Gladbach goal. And at the beginning it went the way you wouldn’t want it to.

Bochum ran from the first minute and put Borussia under pressure – and that was rewarded fairly quickly. Christopher Antwi-Adjei ran away from the opposing defense and gave Olschowsky no chance from 14 meters (7th). Shortly thereafter, it was a mistake by Nico Elvedi that led to the second goal. Philipp Hofmann used a back pass that was too short and easily scored to make it 2-0 (11th).

Gladbach seeks his luck in the air

The Gladbachers, on the other hand, also had major problems as a result. Coach Daniel Farke’s ball possession football didn’t come into play at all given the hosts’ aggressive style of play. So it was only successful with high balls.

But first Marcus Thuram failed after a corner with a header from Manuel Riemann (17′), then Ramy Bensebaini also had the chance to score the goal after a set piece, but was decisively blocked by Elvedi (45′). And so it remained at the two-goal deficit at half-time.

Bochum first unlucky, then with a serious mistake

After a short time, however, it would have been three hits. But Gladbach was lucky that Ivan Ordets only hit the post with his header (52nd). But then Bochum made sure that the game got exciting again.

Kevin Stöger shot Jonas Hofmann and from there the ball landed at Marcus Thuram. The Frenchman passed his compatriot Alassane Plea, who scored the goal (63′).

However, those who had expected the start of a race to catch up were disabused. Shortly afterwards, Simon Zoller was only a few centimeters short of a low cross to make it 3-1 (65th). On the other hand, Gladbach’s offensive efforts usually ended well in front of the Bochum goal.

VAR prevents Gladbach’s compensation

There was only one more excitement: Ramy Bensebaini scored after a cross from Hofmann for the supposed equalizer (83rd). But after viewing the video images, it became clear that the German international was previously offside.

It was the only chance that Gladbach was able to create in the closing stages. And so it remained with the victory for Bochum – and Gladbach’s seventh unsuccessful game abroad this season.
