VfB Stuttgart’s Borna Sosa talks about ambitions and relegation battle

Seeks transfer to top club

Left-back Borna Sosa from VfB Stuttgart, who are threatened with relegation, is aiming for a transfer to a club that regularly takes part in the Champions League. “For me it is a goal to eventually switch to a club that has these ambitions permanently,” said the 25-year-old in an interview with the “Stuttgarter Zeitung” and the “Stuttgart News“. However, it is “not decisive which country that would ultimately be”.

Sosa’s contract runs until June 30, 2025. During the winter break, the Croatian international was about to move to league rivals Bayer Leverkusen, but the Swabians turned down an offer. “I accept this decision and we have remained that I will continue to do everything for VfB and that we may look for a solution in the summer,” emphasized Sosa. Most recently, he made no secret of the fact that he focused on England. “Like many players, I dream of playing in the Premier League one day,” he said. It is “the strongest league in the world. It’s not just the big six top clubs, the other teams are strong too.”

CEO Alexander Wehrle recently said: “Our goal is to stay up in the league. Borna lives VfB, subordinates everything to this goal and is an important player for our team. That’s why we decided against accepting Bayer’s offer.” Sosa is the most valuable professional in the squad for my market value of 20 million euros and, according to reports, would probably be available for an amount below this mark, since VfB’s pain threshold is at least 15 million euros. Euros are traded – the Swabians only made more money in their club history when five players were sold.

With VfB, Sosa is fighting to stay in the class. “The relegation battle is getting on my nerves,” he said. The Stuttgarters are also struggling with their considerable fluctuations in performance: “Sometimes it looks like we’re only delivering 60 percent and then 120 percent again.” Sosa believes “that it’s because we almost every game like a final have to tackle. That fuels the fear in our actions, especially when things don’t go well.” After 23 games, VfB are in the relegation ranks, the duel at Eintracht Frankfurt is on Saturday (3.30 p.m.).
