In the summer of 2020, Waldemar Anton moved from Hannover 96 to VfB Stuttgart, with whom he is currently shaking up the German Bundesliga as captain after two years in the face of the relegation battle. It’s no wonder that there have been rumors about other clubs’ interest in the 27-year-old. However, the central defender comments calmly on this.
“If everything goes well, I can well imagine staying beyond that,” explains Waldemar Anton, when confronted by the “Stuttgarter Nachrichten” that his current contract with VfB Stuttgart ends in the summer of 2025. “My family likes it in Stuttgart, things are going great in terms of sport, I don’t see any reason for anything else at the moment,” continued the former German U21 national player.
A clear commitment to the Swabians, which could, however, crumble under certain circumstances. “If something special were to happen, I’m not the kind of person who wouldn’t at least listen to it. You have to be that honest. But as I said: That’s not an issue at the moment,” Anton says.
You can’t blame the defensive star for turning his back on the country for “something special”, especially since Anton leaves no doubt that he still has high goals in his career.
“Biggest dream of all” is difficult to fulfill with VfB Stuttgart
He not only wants to hear the Champions League anthem on the pitch, but “dreams of winning the competition,” said Anton.
This goal is “very, very ambitious” and he is aware that he may not achieve it, “but I generally find high goals extremely important for motivation. And my biggest dream of all is to win the Champions League.”
At least participation in the premier football league for the first time does not seem to be completely out of the question at the moment. After seven match days, VfB Stuttgart is in second place – even ahead of series champions FC Bayern and BVB.
