VfB Stuttgart transfers defenders to the competition

Darmstadt 98 has agreed on a permanent transfer of Matej Maglica with VfB Stuttgart.

The Croatian, who is initially on loan until the end of the season, will receive a contract with the Lilies from next summer until June 2027. The club announced this at its annual general meeting on Monday evening.

“Matej has proven his qualities and shown that he can still develop further with us. We are pleased that he has integrated so well and is fulfilling our expectations of him in terms of sport,” said sporting director Carsten Wehlmann.

“I have felt completely at home with the Lilies since day one and feel the great appreciation of those in charge. I am happy that my path here in Darmstadt will continue beyond the current season,” explained Maglica, who has played nine competitive games so far ( one goal) for the promoted team.

VfB Stuttgart also announced Maglica’s move. “Matej quickly gained a foothold in Darmstadt after his move in the summer. We have agreed on a corresponding transfer agreement with those responsible there and wish Matej all the best for his future career,” said sports director Fabian Wohlgemuth.

Back and forth at VfB Stuttgart

Maglica moved from 1. Göppinger SV to the VfB substructure in 2020. A loan to FC St. Gallen in Switzerland followed at the beginning of 2022, and then the final move six months later.

Last summer, the Swabians activated a buyback option in order to then pass Maglica directly on to Darmstadt.

The 25-year-old saw one of three red cards in his new employer’s bitter 8-0 debacle at FC Bayern on Saturday (41st). The others who conceded were teammate Klaus Gjasula (21st) and Joshua Kimmich (4th).

It was Maglica’s second red of the current season; he was also sent off against Borussia Mönchengladbach on matchday 4.
