VfB Stuttgart sells Orel Mangala to Nottingham – 4th Bundesliga new signing

VfB makes a profit

Defensive midfielder Orel Mangala is moving from VfB Stuttgart to Nottingham Forest as expected. Both clubs announced this on Sunday. The 24-year-old signed a long-term contract with the newly promoted Premier League, an exact term was not published. According to reports, it is a working paper until 2026. After Union Berlin’s Taiwo Awoniyi (24), Mainz 05s (26) and FC Bayern’s Omar Richards (24), Mangala is the fourth new signing from the Bundesliga in the “Tricky Trees”.

The fixed fee for the Belgian national player is said to be 13 million euros, which could increase by 2 to 4 million euros due to possible bonus payments. In addition, VfB is said to have secured a 15 percent stake in a resale of Mangala. With the transfer, Nottingham, which is playing first-class again after a 23-year absence, has now invested a total of around EUR 95m this summer – including the Mangala deal, EUR 52m of which will flow towards the Bundesliga. The best-known newcomer is Jesse Lingard (29), who came on a free transfer from Manchester United.

VfB sports director Sven Mislintat said on Mangala’s farewell: “We have always emphasized that when we make offers, we take into account the economic conditions, the sporting evaluation and also the player’s perspective in our considerations and then decide on a possible transfer. From a sporting point of view, we would of course have liked to see Orel stay with us longer, but the economic aspect and the player’s desire for a change ultimately led to us agreeing to this transfer. As with Gregor Kobel and Nico Gonzalez last summer, Orel’s path is proof that VfB is a very good place to develop top players. We thank Orel for the years in the jersey with the red chest ring and wish him all the best for the future.”

Through Mangala sale: Now positive transfer balance of VfB Stuttgart

In 2017, VfB took Mangala from RSC Anderlecht for EUR 1.8 million after BVB let an option to buy the former loan player expire. As a result, the Belgian was active on loan for HSV and made a total of 109 appearances for the Swabians. Thanks to the rumored income of EUR 13 million, VfB’s transfer balance improved from EUR -6.4 million to EUR +6.6 million.
