VfB Stuttgart: Sami Khedira, Philipp Lahm & Christian Gentner return

Stuttgart makes slight minus

VfB Stuttgart brings prominent support on board and expands its structures in the field of sport. Sami Khedira and Philipp Lahm, former VfB pros and world champions from 2014, are now supporting CEO Alexander Wehrle as advisors. Christian Gentner and Cacau, who like Khedira became champions with the Swabians in 2007, are also returning to VfB. While Cacau acts as a brand ambassador, ex-captain Gentner will become part of sporting director Sven Mislintat’s team as head of the licensed players department. VfB will not bring in an external sports director, Wehrle emphasized on Sunday at the general meeting.

“After analyzing the season, I informed everyone in charge that we would be expanding in the sport. That we want to enable different perspectives, especially from people who have played professional football themselves. And it’s important to me that we involve former VfB players. We have found the right personalities in world champion captain Philipp Lahm, world champion Sami Khedira and our former captain Christian Gentner. I am very pleased that they are involved with VfB. I would like to thank the entire Supervisory Board, headed by President Claus Vogt, for unanimously following my recommendation. We want to go the way as a team together with the people involved in the sport. I firmly believe that continuity with the right personalities is the key to success,” explained Wehrle.

Gentner is currently still lacing his shoes for the Swiss first division club FC Luzern, but will be giving up on January 1, 2023. “It’s something very special that I can start my career after my career at VfB Stuttgart. I would like to expand what I learned in the management course with practical experience at VfB, bring in new things, learn new things and successfully use my perspective as an active player for the team. I’m really looking forward to working with everyone involved at VfB and to returning to my home club,” said the current FCL captain.

Khedira said: “I had very good discussions with Alexander Wehrle, who convinced me with his ideas and his energy. Being able to advise him and VfB on sporting issues really appeals to me. In the 15 years as an active footballer I was able to experience a lot, had insights into very well-managed clubs and worked with a wide variety of coaches. I would like to share these experiences and insights with VfB, my heart club.” And Lahm said: “VfB should be a club in which its fans recognize themselves, which is rooted in Swabia, which gives its members a home of talent from the region and who wins far more often than loses. Alexander Wehrle is now taking a new path, one that suits VfB.”

VfB Stuttgart makes a slight minus in 2021 – corona losses enormous

VfB Stuttgart also reported only a slight financial loss for the 2021 financial year, but the total losses due to the Corona crisis are now enormous. The Swabians are pinning their hopes on the expected additional income from ticket sales and marketing following the renovation of their stadium. Its completion is scheduled for Christmas 2023.

The past financial year brought VfB AG a deficit of 1.2 million euros. Thanks in part to a positive transfer balance, it was significantly lower than in 2020. At that time it was EUR 28.4 million. Personnel expenses in the 2021 financial year amounted to EUR 82.8 million, a good EUR 13 million more than in the previous year. A large part of this was accounted for by the licensed players and functional teams. However, the second division salaries of the second half of the 2019/20 season were also included in the 2020 balance sheet.

The corona-related loss of sales of the outsourced professional department of VfB has totaled 89 million euros since the outbreak of the pandemic in March 2020. In gaming operations alone, for example due to a lack of spectator income, there has been a loss of around 48 million euros since then. “The numbers are still relatively good compared to other traditional clubs,” said CEO Wehrle. At the same time, he emphasized: “In the next two or three years we will still have to carry around the loss of income from the past two seasons with us – and have to pay it off.”

The eV of VfB made a loss of 308,000 euros in 2021. One reason for this was increased investment in the youth academy, the Stuttgart explained. VfB intends to increase its membership from currently around 76,700 to 85,000 next year.
