VfB Stuttgart presents Fabian Wohlgemuth – SC Paderborn receives transfer fee

“Fits our profile perfectly”

Now it’s official: Fabian Wohlgemuth is following in the footsteps of Sven Mislintat at VfB Stuttgart. The 43-year-old comes from SC Paderborn 07 and takes over the post of sports director at the Swabians. Wohlgemuth signed a contract with VfB until June 30, 2025. According to the East Westphalians, they will receive “appropriate compensation” for the change.

“With the new appointment to the position of sports director, we want to set both a new impetus and a sign of continuity on our way. Fabian Wohlgemuth fits our profile perfectly. He recently proved in Paderborn that he can put together a valuable squad that plays attacking, passionate football with manageable means. He also brings a wealth of experience in the youth field. Fabian Wohlgemuth joins our well-rehearsed, competent team around Markus Rüdt and Thomas Krücken, which enjoys great trust throughout VfB and will be joined by Christian Gentner from January. In this constellation, the operational center of our club, sport, is excellently positioned,” said CEO Alexander Wehrle.

Wohlgemuth added: “VfB have set sporting standards in German football history. It’s a vibrant club with a great fan culture, an exciting squad and incredible potential. At the same time, it is clear that the sporting and economic tasks at VfB will challenge our team spirit. I believe that things work particularly well when they are born and worked on in a team. The talks with Alexander Wehrle and other VfB managers have absolutely convinced me that we think and act the same way here. I’m full of anticipation to work together with everyone at VfB on a successful future.”

Wohlgemuth has worked for the second division club Paderborn since 2020. The 43-year-old was previously head of sport at Holstein Kiel. Between 2011 and 2018 he headed the youth division at VfL Wolfsburg. There he also had dealings with Bruno Labbadia, who was hotly traded for the coaching position at VfB and who was working as head coach for Lower Saxony at the time. However, it is still unclear who should lead the 16th in the table as a coach to the desired relegation. Mislintat and VfB parted ways on Wednesday with immediate effect.

Wohlgemuth to VfB Stuttgart: SC Paderborn wants to present successors in the near future

At SC Paderborn, Robin Trost, head of the licensed player department, will take over Wohlgemuth’s duties on an interim basis, and a successor is to be presented in the near future. “Fabian Wohlgemuth did a very good job in Paderborn and had a strong influence on the sporting development of our club. The sporting results and the quality of the squad have continuously improved. It is part of our club’s DNA to enable players and employees to take the next step in their careers. Also because the move to VfB Stuttgart was rewarded accordingly, we part with a good feeling,” said President Thomas Sagel.
