With purchase option
VfB Stuttgart is loaning defender Leonidas Stergiou from the Swiss first division club FC St. Gallen 1879 for a season. St. Gallen also confirms the existence of a purchase option, which is said to be around 2.5 million euros. Stergiou is Stuttgart’s ninth signing this summer having spent nearly €16m. This is offset by around EUR 22 million in income.
“We have been following Leonidas Stergiou’s development for a long time. He has already gained valuable experience in the Swiss Super League and as a Swiss U21 international. We warmly welcome Leonidas to VfB and look forward to our future together,” said VfB sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth about the transfer.

The player himself said: “It feels incredibly good and it’s very nice to be able to sign a contract with a club like VfB Stuttgart. I am very happy that it worked. I’ve exchanged a few words with Chadrac Akolo and have only heard good things about the club and their amazing supporters. VfB Stuttgart, the city and the region have a lot to offer. I look forward to getting to know everything as soon as possible.”
Stergiou is not seen as a direct replacement for Konstantinos Mavropanos, 25, who is only a matter of time before a move to West Ham United. Rather, Stergiou is rated as a “project with development potential,” reported “Sky” reporter Dennis Bayer.
