VfB Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeneß believes his striker Deniz Undav will make it to the German national team and possibly also to the home European Championships in the summer. “It is the national coach’s job to decide,” said the Swabians’ coach and made it clear that he would not interfere in nomination questions. At the same time, Hoeneß praised the striker highly.
“Deniz does exactly what he can and must do: draw attention to himself with performance. He’s doing it really well,” explained the 41-year-old before the DFB Cup quarter-final at Bayer Leverkusen this Tuesday (8.45 p.m./ARD and Sky). “I think if he keeps doing that, he has a great chance and it’s almost impossible to get past him.”
Undav’s quota in the season so far is “really, really good,” says Hoeneß. The 27-year-old has already scored 13 goals and prepared five more in the Bundesliga. In the last two games alone against RB Leipzig (5:2) and at SC Freiburg (3:1), Stuttgart’s attacker scored a total of four goals and two assists. The right-footer, who was loaned from Brighton with a purchase option, increased his market value with the Swabians from 10 million to 17 million euros, making him currently the fourth most valuable VfB professional (next to Chris Führich).
Undav was born in Germany, his parents come from Turkey. In December he announced his decision to join the German national team. He told national coach Julian Nagelsmann that he would be ready if he got a chance. And this seems to one “Picture“-reportedly exceedingly large. Accordingly, Nagelsmann is said to have assured the in-form attacker that he would nominate him for the upcoming tough tests against France (on March 23rd) and the Netherlands (26th March).
