Sebastian Vettel has announced the end of his career after this season. So Aston Martin needs a replacement – and has found this in the competition.
Fernando Alonso is moving from the Alpine F1 Team to Aston Martin next season. The 41-year-old will succeed Sebastian Vettel there, who is ending his career. The double world champion (2005, 2006) receives a contract for several years. This was announced by the racing team. Aston Martin did not provide any information about the exact duration.
“I still have the hunger and ambition to fight at the top,” he said. Alonso will drive alongside Lance Stroll, son of team co-owner Lawrence Stroll.
Alonso was world champion in 2005 and 2006 with Renault. From 2010 to 2014 he drove for Ferrari, in 2015 he switched to McLaren. After the 2018 season, Alonso announced his retirement from Formula 1 in order to focus primarily on the racing series in North America. In 2021 he returned to his roots and drove in Formula 1 again for Renault under the new team name Alpine.
