Vets learn to better detect abuse in pets | Domestic

Veterinarians can follow a new course at Ghent University in which they learn more about pet abuse and how to deal with it. At Ghent University, master’s students can also learn about the problem, which still too often remains under the radar. The training is necessary because the abuse is not always easy to recognize.

Studies show that in families where animals are abused, family members are also often victims. This concerns partner violence, child or parental abuse. The Flemish government supports the Ghent University project, which was started by forensic veterinary pathologist Leen Van Brantegem.

“Without the vet, an abused pet has no voice,” said Monday. Reporting suspected animal abuse gives veterinarians the opportunity to stop potential violence and suffering, protecting both animals and people. If the veterinarian shares concerning medical findings with the appropriate authorities, they may conduct further investigation.

The new course is for Veterinary Medicine students. But from October 2023 and until May 2024, the training will also be offered to all Flemish veterinarians via regional veterinary associations. In addition, teachers from colleges with animal care training are also given the opportunity to follow training, so that they can also teach their students about this.
