She is only 15 years old, but can already call herself Dutch squash champion: Renske Huntelaar from Hoofddorp scored well this weekend during the National Championships in Amsterdam by winning the national title.
Huntelaar, seeded fourth, caused a surprise on Saturday when she won in five games against Fleur Maas, the champion of 2022 and 2023. On Sunday she won her first national title in the Frans Otten Stadium by beating Tessa ter Sluis 11-7, 11-6, 2-11 and 11-7. Ter Sluis is fourteen years older than Huntelaar.
The young Hoofddorp native currently plays in her own hometown with the Meersquash association. She can prepare for the Olympic Games in the coming years. The sport will debut at the games in Los Angeles in 2028.
For the men, the national title went to 40-year-old Piëdro Schweertman, who defeated Sam Gerrits, twenty years his junior, in four games: 11-5, 9-11, 11-8 and 11-7.
