The program showed images of Piet over the years. That made his twin brother very proud: “Beautiful to see. That was Pete. He had a lot of passion for his work. Very driven. When I see what he’s done. 36 years Omrop Fryslân, 23 years SBS and almost three more years Omroep Max. And then he also did other things during the day, such as the radio. That man was busy with his work all day,” said Lume about the broadcast.
Twin brother Piet Paulusma
Despite the two being twins, Lume and Piet didn’t see each other very often. That also had to do with work. “During the time when he was very fond of SBS and I had my own company, you didn’t like each other much,” Lume explains.
Stronger band
When Lume received the terrible news that Piet was ill, their bond became stronger: “From July 27 last year, when he called me and told me that he still had six months to live, our contact became very intensive. Sunday evening at the pub and during the week at his house, at the bottom of his bar. Talking a lot.” Of course, the news hit like a bomb. “I couldn’t believe it at first. I didn’t know if it was right and if it was so short. But in the end it became seven months. It is very special that he has lasted so long.”
Farewell to Piet Paulusma
He spoke frankly about the farewell, which went very quickly. “Late Friday night I got a call that he was doing very badly. And on Saturday morning he called that he wanted to say goodbye. We said goodbye to him on Saturday afternoon and later watched over with him. And he passed away on Sunday afternoon at twenty past two.”
Last hug
Did they say anything to each other? Unfortunately that was not possible. “Because he was so medicated I couldn’t really talk to him anymore. A hug and something to say and that was it,” said Lume.
