Max Verstappen set the third fastest time in the first free practice of the Miami Grand Prix.
The reigning world champion came to 1,31.277 in his Red Bull. Charles Leclerc, the championship leader, was the fastest in his Ferrari: 1,31.098. George Russell was in between the two with the second fastest time in his Mercedes.

Valtteri Bottas, the Finnish driver of Alfa Romeo, ended up off the track and suffered significant damage. As a result, the session was suspended for some time.

The Miami Grand Prix is new on the calendar. It is the second grand prix in the United States, next to the October race at the Circuit of the Americas. Verstappen is going on the hunt for his third win of the season in Florida.

Earlier this week, Pitlane looked ahead to the very first Miami GP, which is already stirring up a lot of dust from the asphalt in advance. “It’s going to be a huge show, but I wonder if it’s going to be a show on the track too,” said F1 analyst Xavier Maassen. “You will see a change in the asphalt over the course of the weekend. Only when there is more grip will certain cars start to work better.”
