Max Verstappen has had a failed second free practice session of the Miami Grand Prix. The reigning world champion made a brief appearance halfway through practice and returned to the pit lane without setting a time.
Verstappen missed a large part of the training because the team was working on his car. Once he got out on the track, there were still problems and he turned right back on. In the first training session, the Dutchman had only been able to drive a few laps due to problems with the temperature of the Red Bull. He then came to the third time.
George Russell set the fastest time in the second practice. The Mercedes driver was the only one to dive under one and a half minutes: 1.29,938. Charles Leclerc, the championship leader, was 0.106 seconds slower than Russell. Sergio Pérez, Verstappen’s teammate at Red Bull, was good for the third time. He was 0.212 slower than Russell. Lewis Hamilton was right behind that.
The second training was also paused for some time. Carlos Sainz had just set a fast time and soon after he lost control of his Ferrari. Verstappen only came out after there were green lights again, but immediately reported steering problems over the radio and came back inside with some difficulty. Due to a problem with Nicholas Latifi, training was halted again for a while.
Verstappen was the only one with Valtteri Bottas who did not set any time at all. The Finn did not play in the second practice after his Alfa Romeo suffered significant damage in the first session.
The Miami Grand Prix is new on the calendar. It is the second grand prix in the United States, next to the October race at the Circuit of the Americas. Verstappen is going on the hunt for his third win of the season in Florida.
