Max Verstappen was again the fastest in the second free practice for the Canadian Grand Prix. The Red Bull driver drove, with a lap time of 1.14.127, 8 hundredths faster than Charles Leclerc in his Ferrari. His teammate Carlos Sainz, still second behind Verstappen in the first training session, now set the third time.
Verstappen came early in the training to the fastest lap time at that time. Leclerc, who finished fifth in the first training, was now closer to his competitor for the world title. Sergio Pérez, Verstappen’s teammate and also a contender for the world title, only came to the eleventh time.
There were few incidents in the session. In the first half there was talk of a so-called virtual safety car because of a soft drink can on the track, but the drivers were able to continue unimpeded after an employee had cleaned the track again to applause.
Two retirements from Leclerc in the last three races have left Verstappen tilting the championship and leading by 34 points. The race on Sunday at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve is the ninth of this year.
Saturday is the third free practice and qualifying.
