Vermeltfoort finishes first in New Amsterdam

CYCLING – 34-year-old Coen Vermeltfoort was the first to finish in the thirtieth PWZ Zuidenveldtour. In New Amsterdam he was the fastest in a sprint.

Vermeltfoort proved to be the strongest of a leading group of ten riders at the finish. “This victory was still missing from my list of all Dutch races. It always just didn’t work out and now it does,” says the rider of Volkerwessels Cycling Team.

The PWZ Zuidenveldtour started this afternoon in Dalen. The peloton ended up in New Amsterdam via Aalden, Exloo, Barger-Compascuum and Weiteveen. There were two more local rounds.

After about 130 of the 178 kilometers a leading group of ten arose at the Stieltjeskanaal near Zandpol. Winner Vermeltfoort almost missed the trick. “I had a puncture before and I no longer believed in it. Teammates brought me forward again and in the end I turned out to have enough left to win the sprint. I share the cake I got on the podium with the whole team .”
