Venus Williams already out after a single comeback

“A little rusty” on the tour comeback: The seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams has lost her first WTA singles in a year.

The 42-year-old from the USA, who currently has no world rankings, lost in the first round of the Citi Open in Washington to Canadian Rebecca Marino 6: 4, 1: 6, 4: 6.

“I still put myself in really good positions in the third set. I just have to shake off some rust,” said the former world number one: “That was to be expected. I just have to tackle the next tournament and get better.”

Williams has also been given wildcards for the tournaments in Toronto from August 8th and in Cincinnati from August 15th. At the mixed competition in Wimbledon she had shown herself back on the pitch for the first time this year. Her sister Serena (40) also wants to continue her comeback on hard courts.
