Venus Williams has failed to follow her sister Serena’s example at the US Open. The two-time champion was defeated in the first round 6-1, 7-6 (5) by the Belgian Alison van Uytvanck.
The 42-year-old Venus Williams last won a match at the US Open in 2019, the tournament she won in 2000 and 2001.
For Venus Williams it was only her fourth game of 2022. She did not book a win this year.
On Monday evening local time, the two years younger Serena Williams did win. The 23-time grand slam champion, most likely in her final tournament, recently announced that she is looking forward to the next phase in her life. Venus Williams has not yet announced her plans for the future.
Kazakh Elena Rybakina, who was the best at Wimbledon this summer, was eliminated in the first round. The number 25 in the world lost 6-4 6-4 to the French Clara Burel.
