Ventilators and gazpacho for lonely elderly: “Important to look after them”

Everyone is hot these days, but according to healthcare organizations, we have to pay extra attention to the vulnerable groups with these tropical temperatures. These include the elderly, the homeless, young children and people with psychological problems. “They attach great value to a visit.”

“It is now extra important to look after the elderly”, says Sophie Keijzer of Oma’s Soep. Every week the organization brings soup to lonely elderly people. “The elderly often do not tolerate the heat well and they attach great importance to a visit.” According to Keijzer, people now often go outside and it is nice if the elderly feel that they are being looked after.

Gazpacho

Normally Grandma’s Soup brings hot soup, but now they brought frozen soup. The elderly receive a gift on top of that: a fan. “The idea is that they put the frozen soup in front of the fan for cool air,” says Keijzer. “Then it will melt and they will have gazpacho!”

Ice creams for residents

At HVO-Querido, too, extra attention is paid to their residents. Marco de Groot is a manager at a psychiatric institution and says: “Our residents are not always able to take care of themselves. They need more guidance for that.” The team therefore reminds residents to drink enough water. They also adhere to the RIVM guidelines. “They also really like ice creams, so we hand them out a lot.”
