The new measure will come into effect from June, according to a statement from the city. Loudspeakers are no longer welcome because they “can cause confusion and nuisance”. The new policy must ensure that large group trips and tours in the historic center remain manageable. This was said by civil servant Elisabetta Pesce to ‘BBC’.
Venice is one of the most visited cities in Europe: in 2019 the city received almost 13 million tourists. That number is expected to increase in the coming years. Last summer, experts from UNESCO said that the city should be added to the list of world heritage sites at risk. According to them, the influence of climate change and mass tourism would cause irreversible changes. The World Heritage Committee ultimately did not add the city to the list.
