Velserbroeker Correia dreams of prolongation title with Katwijk: “Then I am very proud”

An apotheosis of the top shelf next Saturday in the second division. Three clubs compete for the national title in amateur football. The best papers have VV Katwijk from the Velserbroek trainer Anthony Correia. “If we can extend the title on Saturday, then I will be very proud.”

With the tournament schedule and whistle in hand, Anthony Correia will arrange the foot volley tournament at Telstar on Wednesday afternoon. The club from Velsen-Zuid is done with the competition and so there are relaxed training sessions on the program. Correia is head coach Mike Snoei’s right hand, but he is also ultimately responsible for VV Katwijk. And at that club there is a lot at stake this weekend. “It’s very simple. We just have to win, then we’ll probably be champions.”

“Last Legs”

Together with AFC, Katwijk is on 68 points and in third place with two points less, Rijnburgse Boys is still an outsider for the title. Katwijk has a much better goal difference (+8) compared to the Amsterdam amateur club. “Although winning sounds too easy,” says Correia on the edge of the main field in Telstar. “I do notice that some players are on their last legs. Everything just has to coincide well.”

You just have to go for something until the last minute, otherwise you have to hand in your bag.”

If Katwijk wins on Saturday, the club is at 71 points. With that number, Correia’s club very convincingly won the national title last season. Then the difference with number two HHC was nine points. “That is a funny statistic and the goal difference is also almost the same as last season.” It is striking that Katwijk did very poorly this season before the winter break. In sixth place with ten points behind leader AFC. “Still, I still believed in it and so did the players. You just have to go for something until the last moment, otherwise you have to hand in your bag.”

On paper, AFC has the easiest opponent on paper with number fifteen Excelsior Maasluis. Especially when you consider that Katwijk’s opponent, Spakenburg, reached the semi-finals of the KNVB Cup this season. Spakenburg takes ninth place in the competition and the selection of the fishing village is on the Spanish party island of Ibiza for a few days this week. “Such team building can also work positively for them, so I don’t see that as an extra advantage for us. We just have to look good ourselves, that’s what we influence.”

“I expect a packed sports park”, Correia looks ahead to this weekend’s denouement. “Matches against Spakenburg are always special and given the position and interests of the competition, this game is now even more special.” Katwijk – Spakenburg starts on Saturday at 3.30 pm and then the first whistle will sound at sports park Goed Genoeg in Amsterdam South between AFC and Excelsior Maassluis.
