Vegans vs carnivores: who pollutes less?

doGoing vegan is necessary to save the planet? What type of diet has the smallest ecological footprint? Y can you eat meat sustainably? In this second chapter of ‘My planet needs me’, the EL PERIÓDICO podcast on climate crisis and sustainability, we open the debate with the voices of Miriam Lazarusvegan and eco-anxious official of the newspaper, and Valentina Raffiowho defines herself as someone “committed to the environment, but who likes ham too much”.

With a purebred vegan to one side of the ring and a carnivore who would give his life for a fried chicken to the other, we talked about veganism, environmental impact of food and sustainable diets. We also provide some data to understand what ecological footprint different vegan and carnivorous products have (from beef steaks to the most ‘Instagrammable’ avocados) and what foods we should reduce if we want to help the health of the planet and our own.

Once again, when talking about changing habits, we remember the importance of framing this decision from a privileged perspective. Not everyone has the time, money, and information to change their eating habits.. For this reason, beyond the individual decision that each one makes about what to eat and what not to eat, we defend that these types of changes also be transferred to institutions. The easier it is to get a ‘low emissions menu’the easier it will be for people to bet on sustainable food.
