Veenhuizer farmers take control of nitrogen approach: ‘We don’t want to wait, but act’

Ten farmers around Veenhuizen are taking matters into their own hands to prepare their companies for the new challenges in the field of nitrogen, nature, water and soil. They want to serve as an example for fellow farmers in achieving the stricter nitrogen and environmental targets.

“CO2, biodiversity, Water Framework Directive, nitrogen: farmer Jappie Riedstra collects some terms and regulations that he takes into account in his business operations. And that while Veenhuizen is also wedged between nature, such as the Fochteloërveen and the Norgerholt.

A difficult task, it seems on paper. But Riedstra works like a pioneer. “We don’t want to wait, but act”, he sums up the mission.

It concerns a preliminary exploration of the so-called area-oriented approach to nitrogen, in which governments and farmers sit down together and discuss nature restoration. Among other things, nitrogen emissions are a topic of discussion. This is slowly getting off the ground throughout the Netherlands, but earlier in Veenhuizen than in many other places.
