Tennis player Tim van Rijthoven has advanced to the fourth round of the prestigious Wimbledon tennis tournament. He won on Friday afternoon after three sets against Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili: 6-4, 6-3 and 6-4. The 25-year-old tennis player from Roosendaal is the first Dutchman in eighteen years to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon.
Van Rijthoven’s victory can be called surprising, because he was as number 104 in the world admitted with a wild card. By comparison, Basilashvili is at number 26. Reaching the quarterfinals will probably require an even bigger stunt. In the fourth round, Van Rijthoven may be number three in the world and title holder Novak Djokovic on Sunday.
Van Rijthoven did not yet lose this grass season. At the beginning of June, he finished the ATP tournament in Rosmalen as the winner, which put him on a wild card for Wimbledon. It is the first time for the number three in the Netherlands that he is active in a grand slam tournament.
