Former star striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has clinched his first major title as a coach. The 46-year-old won the Dutch Cup final against Ajax Amsterdam 3-2 on penalties with defending champions PSV Eindhoven.
After 90 and 120 minutes it was 1: 1 (0: 1), the equalizer for PSV was scored by former Bundesliga professional Thorgan Hazard (67th).
Van Nistelrooy had succeeded Roger Schmidt, who had moved to Benfica, at the start of the season. As a player, van Nistelrooy had scored 62 goals in 67 games for Eindhoven between 1998 and 2001. From January 2010 until the end of the 2010/11 season, the goalscorer played for Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga.
For PSV it was the second cup win in a row and the eleventh in the club’s history. Only Ajax (20) and Feyenoord (13) have won the title more often.
